UCASA has worked diligently to establish sexual assault nurse examiners (SANE) across the state of Utah. The role of a forensic nurse is obtained through specialty training on best practices to care for survivors of sexual and physical violence.
A medical-forensic exam is offered up to 144 hours or 6 days after the assault, though this time frame may be extended in some circumstances. This thorough examination includes screening for any life-threatening injuries, medical and assault history gathering, STI prophylaxis, emergency contraception, and a head-to-toe examination to identify areas of injury and sources of forensic evidence. The survivor has many options provided during the exam and is empowered to choose what works best for them.
Any survivor of sexual assault can receive a medical exam for free, and a forensic nurse will respond if within the 6-day or special circumstance timeframe. Medical evaluation after a sexual assault is highly recommended and will connect you with community resources and additional support. We encourage everyone to get a medical-forensic exam to collect any evidence that might be there since the evidence will disappear with time. Medical forensic exams are free and do not require adults to move forward with an investigation of the sexual assault. If you do not want a medical forensic examination but would like other healthcare, you can visit Planned Parenthood, your local health department, or your primary care provider. Any emergency medical needs can be addressed at your local Emergency Department.
