what is social norms theory?
Social norms theory provides a model for understanding human behavior that has important implications for health promotions and prevention. It states that much of our behavior is influenced by incorrect perceptions of how other members of our social groups think and act. This model can be applied to dating and relationship violence. The model is predicated on the idea that if we understand perceptions of our peer groups we will be more likely to identify unhealthy relationship behavior and, in response, identify, highlight, and normalize healthy relationship behavior. UCASA, in collaboration with the Utah Department of Health, is administering a social norms survey to collect data on attitudes about relationship and dating behavior.
