Utah Sexual Violence Council (USVC) Creates Ad Hoc Campus Subcommittee - The USVC approved the recommendation for the creation of an ad hoc college and university campus subcommittee at its June meeting. The intention of the committee is to promote and support intercollegiate communications and collaboration among campuses across the state as well as between campuses and local sexual violence service providers. The first meeting of the ad hoc campus subcommittee is open to all interested and scheduled for June 30th at 2:00pm. :more information
Department of Justice Launches Plan for a National Sex Offender Registry - On May 26th, Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales announced the expedited design and delivery of a national registry website to allow citizens to search already existing public state and territory sex offender registries. The initiative will provide parents and other concerned citizens with immediate access to sex offender information beyon their own streets or states, all from a single search that will deliver results based on a name, zip code, geographical area, or other query. The Department of Justice will work with states and territories to link thier public registeries to the national search site. The National Sex Offender Public Registry will provide an opportunity for all states and territories to participate in an unprecedented public safety resource by sharing comprehensive, free-of-charge public sex offender data with citizens nationwide.
Posttraumatic Stress Disorder in Female Veterans and the Links to Sexual Violence - "When scientists study the psychiatric injuries of war, they usually study it in men. But now more women are coming back from Iraq with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Abbie Pickett of the Wisconsin National Guard faces a continuing struggle to get her life back on track." - The Span of Ware: A Woman Guard Member's Struggle with PTSD by Joseph Shapiro. In National Public Radio's (NPR) June 2nd Morning Edition, the Department of Veteran Affairs has found that: : Women who join the military are more likely - when compared to women in the civilian world - to have been sexually abused as children. : In the service, they may deal with sexual violence again: 71% of women who ask for VA disability benefits for PTSD say they've been sexually assaulted while in the military. : For men, the traumatic events most often associated with PTSD are rape, combat exposure, childhood neglect and childhood physical abuse. : In women,
the most frequently associated traumas are rape, sexual molestation,
physical attack, being threatened with a weapon and childhood physical
abuse. PREA Update: Stop Prisoner Rape's Report on the Prison Rape Elimination Act - Stop Prisoner Rape (SPR), a national human rights organization that seeks to end sexual violence in all forms of detention, celebrated the passage of this historic legislation. As the only organization in the country that works soley on this issue, SPR is closely monitoring PREA's implementation. This publication represents an analysis of the law's impact to date and highlights some areas of concern which, if addressed, will help to ensure PREA's success. :report
FY 2006 Education and Technical Assistance Grants to End Violence Against Women with Disabilities Grant Program - The Office of Violence Against Women (OVW) will release a Call for Concept Papers for the Disabilities Grant Program in the Fall of 2005. UCASA is taking this opportunity to solicit suggestions for education and technical assistance programs and to establish collaborations with service providers, disability organizations, nongovernmental and governmental agencies serving individuals with disabilities. RFP Informational Meeting on Thursday, June 23, 2005, 10:00 - Noon at
the Utah Department of Health, 288 North 1460 West , SLC, room 125.
This meeting is for those interested in applying for Fiscal Year 2006
Abstinence Education Funding. During the meeting, the RFP materials
and application process will be reviewed. Time will also be allotted
for any questions, comments and networking. Attending this meeting is
optional. Attendance will in no way affect who will be granted program
funds.
