The UCASA Lending Library

 The UCASA Lending Library exists to provide resources and support to rape crisis centers, victim advocates, government, non-profit agencies, military bases, universities and any and every individual seeking a society free of sexual violence.

 The library features a collection of books, films – both narrative and documentary, educational curriculum, reports, and magazines that focus on sexual assault advocacy, prevention and treatment. The UCASA library always welcomes donations of any materials that are relevant to the dialogue of sexual assault.

 Access to the library is available to both UCASA Members and Non-Members.

 UCASA Member Library Benefits

  • UCASA members are allowed to check out up to 3 items at any one time.
  • Members may have items shipped free of charge to a Utah address as long as their membership is active.
  • Checkout time for members is 3 weeks.
  • Members may place reservations on items up to 48 hours in advance.

Non-Member Library Benefits

  • Non-Members are allowed to check out up to 2 items at any one time.
  • Non-members may have 2 items shipped free of charge to a Utah address per year. Non-members will be charged for outgoing shipping on any additional items within a 12-month period.
  • Checkout time for non-members is 2 weeks.

General Library Policies

In order to keep materials readily available for checkout, please note the following policies:

  • Any individuals wishing to check out library items must complete a Library Borrower application. An active credit card is required to sign up for library services.
  • Late fees will be charged as follows:
  1. $0.50 /daily late fee per book
  2. $1.00 daily late fee per video.
  3. On a positive note, late fees will go towards the purchase of more library items.

Materials that are postmarked or dropped off at the UCASA office after the due date are considered late.

  • Lost or damaged materials:
  1. The borrower assumes full responsibility for the materials while they are checked out.
  2. If materials are lost, stolen, or damaged, UCASA will charge the borrower the cost of the replacement in addition to any associated shipping charges. If materials are not returned to UCASA after a month from the due date, UCASA will charge the replacement/shipping costs to borrower.
  • Reference Materials:
  1. There are some materials in the library that are not available for checkout. They are marked as reference materials on the library listing. You may contact the UCASA office by phone or email to schedule a time to review these materials at the UCASA office.
  • Checkout Period: 2-3 weeks, depending on membership status.
  • Renewals are considered on a case-by-case basis.
Patrons are welcome to pick up and drop off materials at the UCASA office located at: 284 West 400 North, Salt Lake City, UT 84103. UCASA will ship items to Utah addresses upon request. Outgoing shipping is paid by UCASA depending on membership. Return shipping is paid by all library patrons.

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) Data: July 2011 

Key Points:

  • Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have been linked to adverse health outcomes such as violence, obesity, diabetes, cardiopulmonary disease, and other negative physical and mental health behaviors later in life.
  • Females were significantly more likely to report sexual violence adverse childhood experiences compared to males (Table 1). Females were twice as likely to report being touched sexually by an adult (OR=2.2, CI 2.2–2.2) or forced to sexually touch an adult (OR=2.2, CI 2.2–2.3) as a child compared to males. Furthermore, females were seven times more likely to report being raped as a child compared to males (OR=6.9, CI 6.7–7.0). As the ACE score increased, the rape prevalence also significantly increased from 2.0% of adults with 0 ACEs to 30.2% of adults with ≥5 ACEs.

Curriculums:

Sexual Assault and Dating Violence Education Curriculum- prepared by Tyson Kay and Christiana Tawzer as part of their 2011-2012 Service Project with the Bennion Community Center at the University of Utah.  This curriculum is free to use and is compiled from the following sources: San Diego Sexual Assault Risk Reduction Curriculum 2001, Michigan Dating Violence “It’s a Big Deal” Curriculum 2002, Cuidate: A Culturally-Based Program to Reduce Sexual Risk Behavior Among Latino Youth.  Some aspects of this curriculum may not be accordance with the Utah State Core Curriculum and may need to be adapted as necessary.

Advocacy Training

UCASA offers many training and education opportunities. The 40 Hour Advocacy Training is geared towards victim advocates, law enforcment, health care providers and other professions. It gives an overview of rape and sexual assault, teaches advocacy skills to work direclty with victims and meets the requirements of the Utah Confidential Communcations Act. UCASA also offers professional development trainings that are geared towards specific professions and focus on specific topics such as current research, best practices etc. Professional developments to match your agency's needs are available on request.
